Widal Test
An older blood test sometimes used for typhoid. It's often misleading on its own.
Quick Summary
Used in some places to support typhoid diagnosis, though blood culture is better.
Antibodies against Salmonella Typhi O and H antigens.
No preparation needed.
Overview
In India, many people have antibodies from past exposure, so a single Widal test often gives false results.
Blood culture is the recommended test for typhoid.
What It Measures
O and H titres
Antibody levels.
How It's Performed
- 01
Preparation
Usually no special preparation. Tell the staff about medicines you take.
- 02
Blood sample
A small amount of blood is taken from a vein in your arm with a thin needle.
- 03
Afterwards
Press on the spot for a minute. A small bruise is common; you can go back to normal activities.
Interpreting Results & Next Steps
Discuss with Doctor
Don't rely on a single Widal result. Normal ranges differ between laboratories, ages and sexes; always use the range printed on your report and ask your doctor what your results mean.
If values are High:
Only a fourfold rise in titres between two samples is meaningful.
