Blood tests to diagnose dengue fever.

Quick Summary

Primary Purpose

To confirm dengue in people with fever during the dengue season.

What It Measures

NS1 antigen (first days of fever) and IgM/IgG antibodies (after about 5 days).

Preparation

No preparation needed.

Overview

NS1 is best in the first five days of fever; antibodies are better later.

A blood count to monitor platelets and haematocrit is done alongside.

What It Measures

NS1 antigen

Early infection.

IgM

Recent infection.

IgG

Past or repeat infection.

How It's Performed

  1. 01

    Preparation

Usually no special preparation. Tell the staff about medicines you take.

  2. 02

    Blood sample

A small amount of blood is taken from a vein in your arm with a thin needle.

  3. 03

    Afterwards

Press on the spot for a minute. A small bruise is common; you can go back to normal activities.

Interpreting Results & Next Steps

Discuss with Doctor

A negative early test doesn't rule it out; repeat testing may be needed. Normal ranges differ between laboratories, ages and sexes; always use the range printed on your report and ask your doctor what your results mean.

If values are High:

A positive NS1 or IgM supports dengue.
